Protect MI Care Candidate Pledge

Protect MI Care is a statewide coalition of more than 260 health care providers, advocates, and community organizations working to preserve and strengthen Medicaid for everyone in Michigan. About one in four Michiganders — roughly 2.5 million people — rely on Medicaid, including nearly 660,000 covered through the Healthy Michigan Plan. Medicaid covers 39% of Michigan’s children, pays for 37% of births, and covers the care of 65% of nursing home residents.

Federal law enacted in 2025 reduces federal support and limits the tools Michigan uses to pay its share, with new requirements taking effect between late 2026 and 2027. In 2027, public officials will face critical decisions about Medicaid’s future in our state. When we protect Medicaid, we protect Michigan.

As a candidate for public office in Michigan, I pledge to:

1. Put coverage ahead of paperwork. I will work to ensure that no eligible Michigander loses Medicaid coverage because of difficult application or reporting processes.

2. Choose stability over stopgaps. I will work toward stable, long-term Medicaid funding, including a dedicated and sustainable revenue source, rather than one-time fixes that leave families, hospitals, and clinics renegotiating their future every year. I will avoid closing budget gaps by cutting eligibility, benefits, or provider payments.

3. Protect access in every community. I will work to keep care within reach in every part of Michigan, from cities to rural communities, including hospitals and safety-net clinics, mental health and substance use treatment, long-term care and home- and community-based services, and coverage for pregnant women, infants, and children.

4. Govern by evidence and by lived experience. I will meet with Medicaid enrollees, providers, and advocates in the communities I seek to represent, and review publicly reported data on how many Michiganders are affected as federal and state changes take effect.
